The North Dallas town of Preston Hollow was named for the deep wooded area with creeks and hollows extending north of Northwest Highway and west from Preston Road. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1939, and provisioned by the Preston Road Fresh Water Supply District. The first map of Preston Hollow shows the area to extend just up Preston Road to Walnut Hill, only to the east including the large lots of Deloache & Woodland, and to the west to just past Midway Road.
In 1945 Preston Hollow residents voted to join the city of Dallas, and the municipality was annexed to Dallas shortly thereafter. One of the original farmhouses of the area still exists at the corner of Meadow & Preston Road. The "country road" feel of the neighborhoods and mature trees continue to attract residents to the area.
Today, the area known as Preston Hollow is more broadly considered to be south of I 635, north of Northwest Highway, east of Central Expressway, and west of Midway. Some parts of Preston Hollow are known as the "estate area" with lots exceeding 1 & 2 acres.
Many notable residents live in the Preston Hollow area including former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Mark Cuban, Dirk Nowitski, Roger Staubach, Daryl Johnston, Lee Trevino, & Jordan Spieth. Business executives include T. Boone Pickens, software developer Larry Lacerte, investor Harold Simmons, and formerly Ross Perot & Mary Kay Ash.
